The youth wing of the Labour Party (LP) has begun consultations on a proposed political alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, with discussions including possible support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Ken Omusi, the LP youth leader in Edo State, disclosed this in a statement posted on X on Saturday.

According to Omusi, the proposed political alignment would involve the Labour Party youth leadership, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement and other support groups associated with President Tinubu.

He said the proposal emerged from a virtual meeting held on October 2 and attended by Kennedy Ahanotu, the party’s national youth leader, members of the national youth leadership, zonal youth leaders and state youth leaders.

The meeting, Omusi said, focused on the Labour Party’s political direction amid its internal crisis and the future of youth participation in governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said several participants raised concerns about what they described as limited recognition, engagement and support for young members of the party following the 2023 elections.

The youth leaders also discussed the need for a political platform that would provide greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment and involvement in national decision-making.

The meeting also considered policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration, including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

Omusi said participants expressed different views on the administration’s policies and their possible impact on Nigeria’s development.

The youth leaders subsequently asked Ahanotu to begin consultations with stakeholders in the APC and other relevant groups to assess the possibility of political cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Participants expressed confidence in Ahanotu’s leadership and tasked him with facilitating the proposed alliance through consultations and consensus-building,” Omusi said.

He added that the Labour Party youth wing had also proposed a physical meeting of its youth leaders in Abuja, where the outcome of the consultations would be reviewed and a decision taken on the next steps.

The proposed meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the youth leaders to determine whether the proposed political realignment should proceed and, if so, under what terms.

The development comes as political parties and interest groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
