Dino Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has reacted to the outcome of the party’s presidential primary with a brief and unusual congratulatory message directed at Atiku Abubakar.
The former senator drew a comparison between the primary result and the recent success of English club Arsenal, shortly after Atiku emerged winner of the contest.
Atiku secured a wide-margin victory at the exercise, polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat Rotimi Amaechi, who scored 504,117 votes, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who polled 177,120 votes. The result was announced on Wednesday night by returning officer Tunde Ogbeha.
The outcome positions Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate heading into the next election cycle, adding another chapter to his repeated bids for the presidency.
Reacting on social media shortly after the announcement, Melaye wrote: **“Oga you did it like Arsenal.”**
The remark referenced Arsenal’s recent Premier League title success, which the club secured after a decisive turn of results on the final stretch of the season.
While supporters of Atiku’s victory have welcomed the result, the primary has also generated dispute. Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have rejected the outcome, citing allegations of irregularities and concerns over the credibility of the process.
