The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, Amos Paul, for allegedly burning the genitals of his 10-year-old daughter with a hot pressing iron in Owo Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the incident occurred in Unaun, Upenme community and was reportedly carried out as punishment for bed-wetting.
The command's spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said in a statement issued on Friday that the case was reported to the police on Thursday. The child sustained severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment.
Jimoh said detectives attached to 'A' Division in Owo responded immediately after receiving the report and arrested the suspect at the scene.
"The suspect was taken into custody without delay. The case has been transferred to the Gender Unit for further investigation and other necessary actions in line with established procedures," he said.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the alleged assault, describing it as cruel and unacceptable.
He reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons from abuse and violence.
The police also urged members of the public to report cases of child abuse, domestic violence and related offences to the nearest police station to ensure timely intervention.
