A police inspector attached to the security detail at the Kogi State Government House in Lokoja is being investigated after an assault rifle and ammunition went missing following the theft of his vehicle.

Inspector Mohammed Abdullahi reportedly parked a Toyota Camry with registration number ZKW 650AA at the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists secretariat in Lokoja on June 13, 2026. He is said to have left an AK-pattern rifle, bearing breech number FA 4082, and 30 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition inside the car.

The vehicle was later stolen while it was unattended. On his return, the inspector discovered the disappearance and raised an alarm, triggering a security response across police units in the state.

An internal police communication confirmed that patrol teams, division officers, the control room, and the Violent Crime Response Unit were deployed to locate the vehicle and recover the missing weapon.

The stolen car was later found abandoned in the Felele area, opposite the Federal University Lokoja. However, the rifle and ammunition were no longer inside the vehicle.

Following the recovery of the car, security agencies escalated the case, extending the search for the missing weapon beyond Kogi State. Police commands nationwide have been instructed to step up surveillance and intelligence gathering to trace the firearm and identify those responsible.

Authorities also directed personnel to report any relevant information that could aid the investigation and recovery effort.
