A former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized renewed attempts within the Peoples Democratic Party to position former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election.

Sani made the comments on Monday via a post on X, reacting to reports that a PDP faction had adopted Jonathan as its preferred candidate ahead of the next general election.

He argued that the push comes too late and lacks political grounding, noting that those now backing Jonathan did not rally behind him when the party was in a stronger electoral position.

“If they actually wanted GEJ, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape,” he wrote.

Sani further suggested that the renewed interest in Jonathan is less about a viable electoral plan and more about leveraging his public profile to revive a weakened party structure.

“They just now want him to help them carry the coffin,” he added.

The remarks follow growing debate within the PDP after a faction led by Kabiru Turaki reportedly endorsed Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 presidential contest.
