Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has threatened to remove any local government chairman who fails to deliver victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his or her council area in the 2027 general elections.
Nwifuru issued the warning on Wednesday in Abakaliki during the inauguration of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons for the state’s 13 local government areas.
“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor,” the governor said.
He directed the council chairpersons to work towards delivering 100 per cent votes for the APC in their respective areas and warned them against allowing opposition parties to gain ground.
The governor also urged the chairpersons to maintain a good working relationship with their deputies, while advising the vice-chairpersons to support the substantive chairpersons in running their councils.
Nwifuru said effective performance at the local government level could open the way for greater political responsibilities, citing the career progression of his deputy governor.
Speaking on behalf of the new council chairpersons, the chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Timothy Nwachi, thanked the governor and APC stakeholders for the opportunity to serve.
Nwachi pledged that the chairpersons would justify the confidence placed in them and work to secure a landslide victory for the APC in 2027.
Among those inaugurated were Osborne Umahi, son of Works Minister David Umahi, and Chidi Nwode, brother of the governor’s wife.
