A 500-level student of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, Rebecca Kambai, has died after she was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver in Bauchi.

The 19-year-old student had reportedly returned home for the holiday when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026.

According to a family source, Rebecca had forgotten some of her belongings at school and arranged for friends in Azare to send them to her. When the driver transporting the items arrived at the Bauchi motor park near Awala Hotel, he contacted her to pick them up.

Rebecca was accompanied by one of her brothers on a motorcycle to collect the package. After receiving her belongings, she rode the motorcycle while they headed home.

The source said that when they got to the Police Officers' Mess along Bauchi-Jos Road and were about to turn into their neighbourhood in the New GRA area, a Sharon minibus struck the motorcycle and fled the scene.

Rebecca sustained severe head injuries after hitting the road surface and was confirmed dead at the scene. Her brother suffered injuries in the crash.

A First Information Report (FIR) issued by the RS12.1 Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that the accident occurred at about 5:15 p.m. The incident was reported five minutes later, while FRSC personnel arrived at the scene at 5:30 p.m., recording a 10-minute response time.

The crash took place along the Bauchi-Jos Road in front of the Police Officers' Mess and involved a Jincheng motorcycle with registration number TFB-38-QB, which was being used for private purposes.

The FRSC report stated that two people—an adult male and an adult female—were involved in the accident. The male victim sustained injuries, while the female victim died.

Items recovered from the scene included the motorcycle, a women's hair stretcher and a pair of shoes.

The injured victim was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for treatment, while Rebecca's remains were deposited in the hospital's mortuary. The rescue operation was led by MI III CT Galadima.

Reacting to the loss of her daughter, Rebecca's mother, Mrs Doris Kambai, described her as an intelligent and brilliant young woman who brought joy to her family.

"My daughter, my last baby, will be greatly missed," she said. "She was actually my favourite, and her siblings know that. She took after me in so many ways, and I have been so proud of her. Her coming into my life was truly a blessing."

Mrs Kambai also thanked everyone who has supported the family during their period of mourning and prayed for God's blessings upon them.
