A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, has been killed by a stray bullet during a land dispute in Niger State.
Magaji, a student in the Department of Public Administration, was hit by the bullet in his hometown, Wawa, in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The university’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Baba Akote, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lapai on Saturday.
According to the statement, the student was caught in the incident while a dispute over land was ongoing in the community.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, expressed condolences to Magaji’s family, friends, classmates and associates.
Sulaiman described the death as a painful loss to the university community and prayed for the repose of the student’s soul.
He also urged the communities involved in the dispute to pursue dialogue and exercise restraint to prevent further deaths.
The vice-chancellor called for peaceful resolution of the land dispute and urged residents to avoid actions that could lead to further bloodshed.
