The Presidency has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over his remarks on debating the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

President Bola Tinubu's Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, described Obi as a "miracle centre presidential candidate" while questioning how he emerged as the NDC's flag bearer.

Bwala was reacting to Obi's interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where the former Anambra State governor said Umahi must first become the presidential candidate of a political party before he would consider debating him.

Obi made the remark after the Minister of Works expressed readiness to debate him on the Federal Government's road infrastructure projects.

Responding in a post on X, Bwala challenged Obi's political credentials, asking whether he had ever secured a presidential ticket through a primary election.

"Peter Obi is telling Chude on his podcast that if H.E. Dave Umahi wants to debate him, he should first qualify as a presidential candidate," Bwala wrote.

He continued: "Funny; Peter Obi, how did he qualify to be a presidential candidate? Did he participate in any presidential primaries? In fact, has he ever participated in any presidential primaries?"

Bwala concluded by saying, "Imagine a miracle centre presidential candidate questioning a successful governor and performing minister on qualifications."
