The military has confirmed the death of an Army officer, Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, during an operation that led to the rescue of 44 abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
Military sources said Lieutenant Isaac was killed in the line of duty while participating in the coordinated rescue mission carried out by security agencies in the Old Oyo National Park on July 10, 2026. He was buried the same day, according to the sources.
The operation resulted in the safe rescue of the victims, who had spent several days in captivity following their abduction.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier disclosed that the military suffered a casualty during the rescue effort. Security sources subsequently identified the fallen officer as Lieutenant Isaac, who was among those leading the mission to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
The victims were kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on or about June 6, 2026, before being rescued by security operatives nearly five weeks later.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death or the conduct of the operation.
