Police in Cross River State have arrested a woman and a pastor following the death of a 14-year-old girl who allegedly suffered repeated beatings after being accused of theft.
The victim, identified as Nancy Peter, died in Wula Community, Boki Local Government Area. Authorities said her mother, Agnes Peter, 45, and Pastor Samson Roman Dago, 43, are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, preliminary findings indicate that the teenager was first beaten by her mother over allegations of theft.
Police said the mother later took the girl to a pastor, who allegedly subjected her to further corporal punishment with a cane.
The teenager reportedly became unconscious after the incident and was rushed to a medical facility in Wula Community, where medical personnel confirmed her death.
ASP Sunday said investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of responsibility of all individuals involved.
The police also addressed reports circulating on social media alleging that the teenager was sexually assaulted before her death. According to the spokesperson, investigations have so far found no evidence to support those claims.
He added that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The case has renewed concerns about child abuse and the continued use of corporal punishment despite legal protections for children in Nigeria.
Cross River's Child Rights Law prohibits physical, emotional and psychological abuse of children and provides penalties for offenders. Child rights advocates have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of the law and increased public awareness to prevent abuse and violence against minors.
