Some electoral officers have been hospitalised after thugs attacked a polling unit in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State during the governorship election.
The incident occurred at Polling Unit 02, Ward 4, before the collation of results began, according to the ward’s collation officer.
The officer reported the attack at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre for Osogbo LGA at about 11:25pm.
He said the incident prevented officials from collating the results from the affected polling unit.
“Some electoral officers injured during the incident are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” the officer said.
The identities of those responsible for the attack and the extent of the injuries were not immediately known.
The incident occurred hours after Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene over alleged attempts to disrupt or take control of collation centres across the state.
Adeleke made the appeal in a social media post on Saturday as the collation of results from the governorship election began.
The governor also urged the President to direct security agencies deployed to Osun to protect the electoral process.
“It is imperative that you use your good office to issue a clear warning to the heads of security agencies deployed to protect the good people of Osun State and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process,” Adeleke said.
He added that reports of attempts to disrupt collation centres were concerning, particularly given the number of security personnel deployed for the election.
The attack in Osogbo has raised concerns over the security of election officials and the integrity of the ongoing collation process in the state.
