President Donald Trump has warned that the United States would launch a devastating military response if Iran attempted or succeeded in assassinating the sitting U.S. president.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Friday, Trump claimed that "1,000 missiles are locked and loaded" and aimed at Iran in response to what he described as threats against his life.
"1,000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat... to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!" Trump wrote.
He added that orders had already been issued for the U.S. military to respond if such an attack occurred.
"Orders have already been given, and the U.S. Military is ready, willing, and able, for a one-year period of time, subject to extension, to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran," he said.
Trump did not provide evidence to support his claim that Iran had made an active assassination threat. Iranian officials have previously denied involvement in plots targeting U.S. leaders, although U.S. authorities have, in recent years, alleged that Iran-backed actors were involved in plans targeting current and former American officials.
