Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, is reported to be considering stepping down as early as Monday following internal pressure within his government and recent electoral setbacks.
According to the British Observer, sources within the party say discussions involving cabinet members, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders, and party donors have intensified in recent days over his future in office. The report claims Starmer has concluded his position may no longer be sustainable, though no official announcement has been made.
The speculation follows the return of Andy Burnham to Westminster after his victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result that has been interpreted within parts of the party as a sign of weakening support for Labour in key areas.
Starmer is said to be spending the weekend at Chequers with his wife, Victoria, weighing his next steps before any formal statement is made. Senior Labour figures quoted in the report suggest a public update could come at the start of the week.
He led Labour to a decisive general election victory in 2024, ending Conservative rule, but his government has since faced a series of electoral losses and declining approval ratings.
If confirmed, his departure would mark another rapid change in UK leadership, adding to a period in which the country has seen frequent turnover at the top of government over the past decade.
